I have known Mark longer than I have known anyone! This made it especially fun to photograph his personality. Mark grew up in the woods. He ALWAYS had some sort of pocket knife on him. If he was sleeping, he'd stash an entire arsenal of knives and survival equipment under his pillow. Odd.
He was a great sport in being up for covering his entire head in shaving cream and sporting a gator machete to shave with.
Colour of the wall contrasted to that of the mirror and complimentary to the shirt. Cheers for a great shot, bud!
Fellow photographer Navy Nhum stopped in for her portrait in the plaid chair. We thought about using her camera in the picture, but we wanted to toe the line of racism here. All in good fun of course.
We actually shot 2 images of Navy, the second you can see here with the samurai sword. Navy walked in to the washroom looking North American and emerged transformed, make up completed and all. A great look. The shoot was less than an hour long.
Sam loves pineapple.
I only had sam take a few bites from this thing AFTER we cut the skin off because it just looked so gross and sloppy! Definitely a great time on this one.
Say hello to Nathan.
Nathan was my old boss when I worked at the camera shop many moons ago. A great boss and a great guy. We got into the routine of playing squash every morning before work. Well, if I could get up early enough. Needless to say he beat me just about every time.
Nathan came over, put on his obnoxious squash gigs and stepped in the shower for a couple seconds to get all wet and steamy. Look out ladies.
One of my favourites from the series.
I have known Adam just about my whole life. A true partner in crime! Adam works in the video game industry designing apps, games and downloadable content for systems that we all know and love.
What better way to show off Adam's daily life events than with the very device he spends his time coding for ;)
And yes, that IS his eyeball on the left. Beautiful isn't it?
Needless to say, I wont forget when Matt & I walked in to the convenience store around the corner from the shoot, to pick up a porno magazine.
I think what made it most awkward was trying to find one with a cover that clearly depicted what he was looking at without being too explicit
See that nerd magician? That's me.
Yep! I'm a magician! I dont look like THAT! But, I wanted to make fun, and play on the typical cliche when someone hears 'magician'.
This particular image is now being used by David Copper field's Associate producer when he lectures to other magicians at conventions across the globe. Cheers for that!
I believe it is also being used in a documentary beeing prouced by Dan & Dave Buck and R Paul Wilson on the topic of ' Our Magic ' coming out later this year.
Fun Fact : Those are magnifier glasses to make my eyes look bigger!
Phil! I worked with Phil at the camera shop. This guy knows something about EVERYTHING. He was always up to something strange during his off time like hunting down UFOs and exploring abandoned buildings.
I'll admit, I accompanied Phil on several of the latter.
To get phil wet, I simply poured a bucket of water over him and put bags out over the floor. Mission accomplished.
Khalinatek. Also known as Khalil.
I worked for Khalil's dad back in the day and years later Khalil and I worked together at Best Buy & the camera shop. We have always shared a passion for video games and chicken wings.
Khalil was infamous for staying up late nights, and by late nights I mean not going to bed - whilst playing a game he ported or downloaded, and pounding red bull and usually some sort of liquor on occasion that i wasn't man enough to drink. Also, a passion for drum and bass!
Khalil lives in the states now. I will miss him! Long live the eclectic mix of t shirts he always wore!
Meet Chadd. Chadd with TWO D's. Took me 3 years to get used to that ;)
Chadd worked with me at Best Buy. He loved his style and kicking footballs. Pretty sure he played on a team too. Although, that could just be myth!
Chadd has a business degree, or a diploma in graphic design, maybe even both, Not sure! However, I will remember the effortless duck face he managed to provide me at a moments notice. Thanks, Chaddddddddddd.
Love this shot.
It is my Mother. She graciously accepted to be a part of the series when i was just still testing it out! She had an epic fur lining around the hoof of her coat that nearly camouflaged in with her natural hair. Combo that with the expression and it makes for one epic shot with lovely warm tones.
Oh, the globe you ask? She teaches Geography. Like a boss I might add.
Martin Ingles - No one else like him! Perhaps one of the happiest fellows I have ever had the pleasure to meet and work with!
Martin used to work for Canon! In fact, a little fun tip for you - The original CPS program Canon offered to pro shooters, came FROM Martin. His baby. He still has the first issued CPS card #1 somewhere. I offered him money for it. He declined.
Every so often I still receive chain junk mail from Martin. Cheers buddy.
The second ever Plaid Chair photo taken!
Adam specifically came over to help me test out the ligting and see if this was something that I could pull off depending on how long each shot would take.
Needless to say, it did. Thanks for all your help over the years Adam!
Fun Fact : Adams face was painted red in post - not in real life.
Meet the once General Manager of Best Buy Newmarket. The Man who hired me. And then hired me again when my line cook position fell through. I went through a "where should I work phase".
Sean moved on to become the director of Geek Squad, and approached me for a themed photo. Later, Best Buy Canada approached me to shoot an annual Geek Conference, however the job fell through when I learned Best Buy wouldn't pay me more than minimum wage to shoot it ;)
Meet Donna, a 'classy killer' as she would say. Also, my wife's best friend! I think she's pretty cool too. She fires guns, has a fancy architectural job and has a husband that can clean an assault rifle faster than I can get my shoes on.
This photo was taken on my wedding day! We had the whole bridal party back for Plaid Chair photos. I only edited a few from that day, and this was amongst one of the ones we liked the best! Perfectly suited, if there was ever a zombie apocalypse, the Cuttings are the first people we'd call.
My sister in law, Lindsay.
She actually chained herself to an old oak out behind the cottage once during a protest to protect the environment.
That was a lie. And I don't have a cottage.
Lindsay went on to get a degree in political Science and is now in her second year of Law School. Relax there, big guns!
She is holding my mothers bonzai tree.
There are TOO many things to say about this character.
World renowned Mentalist, Bobby Motta in his younger years being his happy fun, never a dull moment self.
This man is family to me, and expect to see him in the 2014 series with a whole new look.
Fun Fact - This is the only Plaid Chair shot with that much wall space. Also noted : I have not seen him wear white pants ever since.
Mike was finger printed a few years back for paint balling his neighbours house. I guess he didn't account for the angle of trajectory that eventually lead straight to his backyard deck, ultimately establishing him as the culprit of a vandalism act. Two words for you : Community Service.
Alas, Mike is an exceptionally talented artist. I say artist because there isnt just one specifc thing he is good at, there are dozens. He is currently the in house designer for the worlds largest online retailer of magic supplies and custom decks of playing cards; Ellusionist.
He also has an incredible portfolio on dribble featuring his drawings, designs and typography skills.
Why the orange you ask? Mike loves fruit. And loves to eat. If Mike is around - it's gone. And if you cant finish, Mike will. Can always count on Mike!
Dave is an old old old friend from public and high school.
He would come over all the time, and play Call of Duty while we destroyed pizza's and Blue Powerade. Dave Just became a dad - So, Perhaps we'll see a mini Sgt Graham in 2014 PCS.
My childhood dog. Rusty.
Rusty had more nicknames than the ammount of quarters currently in circulation. he was as fast as lighting, loved his little blue octopus and wore a blue sweater to keep warm.
he sat perfectly still for this and many other shots. Rusty passed away this May and I will never forget his little lion face! #fuzz
Ladies & Gentlemen, meet my Dad. The Mont.
The funny thing about this shot is, he is not a monk, he doesn't smoke, he doesn't drink and he most certainly does not style his hair like that!
I think I gave him a headache while we were shooting this given how many times I had him open his mouth and eyes for "More exaggeration!" It started to just become fun. Sorry Dad!
Fun Fact : Pepsi in the glass.
I met Marina at Best Buy as well. She is a friend of ours from what we like to call the golden days. I.E. Best Buy. Looking back, not so golden. Actually miserable. Dont ever work there.
She's moved on to becoming a successful make-up artist and Im sure will be present at a few of the 2014 shoots!
Fun Fact : Marina is holding a fake cigarette.
Kyle! Matt's Twin! If you feel like you seen this man before, it's probably because they are twins! For real. Real life twins.
Matt & Kyle came over together for a series of shots, all of which can be found on this site. You may just see one of them in 2014.
This time, not displaying his hatred for Nikon, but much much more! Don't worry future Plaid Chair prospects - Martin had underwear on. Boxer's or Briefs? I'll let you decide.
Robyn! Why the horse? Robyn;s family owns a glue plant. I found it fitting. Kidding - obviously.
Robyn rides horses, loves horses and country music. Recently married, she continues to manage a Best Buy North of the city -
Nick Bicanic is an entrepreneur I met through working at the camera shop 5 years ago. Nick is now invested into a start-up relating to scuba equipment and diving.
I could never do that Vulcan sign - Nick does it better than Spock.
Mr. Michael Willems - Fellow photographer and photo journalist. Michael teaches workshops on lighting, and has been doing this crazy craft far loner than any of us have.
To this day, I continue to text him on location for advice and trouble shooting with technical issues regarding outdoor strobes. Cheers michael for always being by your phone!
The conclusion of the Plaid Chair 2009 // See you in 5 years.
